ROBERTO BOTTAZZI
Lindsay Bremner is Professor and Director of Architectural Research in the School of Architecture and the Built Environment at the University of Westminster. She was previously Professor of Architecture in the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia (2006 – 2011) and Chair of Architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg (1998 – 2004). She is an award-winning architect and writer and published, lectured and exhibited widely on the transformation of Johannesburg after the end of apartheid, including the book, Writing the City into Being: Essays on Johannesburg 1998 – 2008 (Johannesburg: Fourthwall Books). She partnered with Mashabane Rose Architects for a second placed entry in the Freedom Square Competition in Kliptown, Soweto in 2002 and with 26’10 South Architects for the award winning Sans Souci Cinema project, also in Kliptown, Soweto between 2004-2007.
Bremner is currently engaged in two ongoing research projects: Folded Ocean, investigating sites in the Indian Ocean world being transformed by global mobility, trans-nationalism and climate change, and Geoarchitecture, research into intersections between architecture, geology and politics framed by the wider anthropocene thesis.This has included research into ship-breaking at Chittagong in Bangladesh; on South Talpatti / New Moore Island, an island on the border between India and Bangladesh that appeared and disappeared, sparking a maritime delineation dispute; on a new transhipment hub at Lamu in Kenya; on the disappearance of MH370 into the Southern Indian Ocean and on the Maldives Archipelago. Outputs include research publications, a design competition entry and design studios conducted in the M Arch programme at the University of Westminster.
Bremner holds a B.Arch degree from the University of Cape Town and M.Arch and DSc.Arch degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She has just been awarded ERC Starting Grant no. 679873 for Monsoon Assemblages, a project that will undertake research into the urban monsoon in Chennai, Delhi and Dhaka (2016-2021).
Roberto Bottazzi is an architect, researcher, and educator based in London. He runs the RC14 in the Urban Design Programme at the Bartlett, UCL and is a Lecturer at University of Westminster where co-runs DS18. Previously, Roberto was Research Coordinator and Master tutor at the Royal College of Art in London (2005-15).
He studied architecture in Italy and Canada before moving to London. His research has been exhibited internationally including: FuturePlace, Porto, 35 Degrees in Chattanooga, USA and FACT, Liverpool, UK. His writings have appeared in Architectural Review, Abitare, DomusWeb, Opere, Critical Cities vol.4 amongst others. He is currently completing a book on the history of computation due to be published by Bloomsbury in 2017.
