Kuda Finolhu Research Resort combines the emerging eco-tourism sector in the Maldives with Scientific research, creating a luxury resort that also operates as a platform for coral research. Tourism is the largest generator of GDP in the Maldives, and an ideal income for funding infrastructure to conserve the bleaching reefs. 

 

As the reef acts as the islands natural breakwater, the resort has the combined function of protecting the island from erosion, as the bleached reef is damaged and failing to do so. By imitating the natural reef, the villas, coral grid and research buildings slow the waves and protect the island, whilst providing a unique tourist experience.
