YEAR 2

umbalakada fishing cooperative

This thesis is concerned with the importance and fragility of the tuna fishing industry in the Maldives. Maldivian Fisheries account for 6% of their GDP, 11% of employment and 98% of the country’s physical export commodities.. The Maldivian way of life and respect for the ocean has protected the fisheries from becoming exploitative to the same extent of other island nations. Pole and line fishing is at the heart of the Maldivian way of life and so, therefore, is the fisher as an individual.

Overall, this thesis aims to provide a design intervention to protect both the sustainable method of pole and line fishing, and the lives of the individual fisher and his family.
