YEAR 2

FUNADHOO RESILIENCE PROGRAMME

Life in the Maldives is under severe threat from climate change, in particular sea-level rise of up to 0.88m by 2100. The unprecedented global changes predicted in the near future will have devastating consequences for the low-lying communities of the Maldives, which survive in just 2m above sea level.

The project involves the design and implementation of a climate-risk based masterplan in order to provide a resilient and sustainable development strategy for the future of Funadhoo island. The urban design strategy system is designed to be responsive and adaptive to changing conditions, whilst maintaining social and cultural ties within the island community. A fresh fish market, public space and residential units are inter-connected via a central organisational spine uniting the whole island.
